If I remember correctly, I think Britain actually allows you to change your gender on legal documents if you want to...you can change your passport and license to reflect the gender you prefer to be addressed as, which is why the British media would use the correct gender. I saw it on a show about TG and sex change opperations a while ago so I might have it wrong, but I think they allow that.

One of my US-based friends had his legal gender changed to reflect reality (male) rather than the accident of birth (female). It was a rather involved and expensive process, and he was ready to *kill* a workplace human resources department that was not prepared to deal with that sort of situation and (illegally) asked him if he would change his gender *back*(!) so their paperwork would be happy.
