soju, Adam, and I went out and saw a movie. Panic Room. Anyone who liked Ekaterin's performance on the space station in Komarr, you are the people I am recommending this movie to.
...Oh, yeah, and anybody else who likes suspenseful movies with a tinge of humor and strong female protagonists, two of them.
There is much kicking ass and taking names. When the shit hits the fan, she starts off, well, panicky, but after a certain crucial threshold, she goes into "hellcat" mode. Imagine how Ekaterin would have reacted had it been Nikki with her there, and not Aunt Vorthys... ...given certain circumstances, though.
I enjoy the visual foreshadowing of certain things that happens. It's one of those "you'll know it when you see it" things. Given my babysitting background, I twigged *right* away. I'm trying not to spoil here, since it's fun to watch for things on your own.
There's a fair amount of McGyvering, on the part of both of the adult leads. I'm not entirely sure about some of the science involved (which is heavier, propane or air?) but other than that I have very few nits.
Imagine, if you will, a science fiction setting... a secret weapon, and two helpless ladies who have stumbled upon it... the scientists -- not "mad scientists, merely very angry engineers" -- who have created the thing have held them hostage, not for the good behavior of the government or military, but just to keep them from running and telling what they've seen and heard, because they've seen too much... after the deployment of the secret weapon, it shouldn't matter too much.
Unbeknownst to the scientists, their novel device doesn't do what they think it does, but something else, very lethal to the space station they're aboard...
The two women are helpless. One is an elderly grandmother with a heart condition; the other, a meek and mild emotionally abused housewife, the old lady's niece. Could they possibly do anything?
Well, yes. The mentally battered wife gets pissed off, lashes out, brings half the security forces on the station down upon the bay... gets locked in the bathroom for a while... when she's let out again, sees an opportunity, runs for the control room, and happily smashes the novel device to smithereens, while calling Station Security (again)...
The scientists describe her as a "hell-cat" to the visiting Imperial Auditors frantically trying to get the situation under control.

...I love this author.
