I poked her. The posts I was seeing suggested that she needed an Ethernet card rather than a DSL filter, though.

I've got a spare one of those for a laptop, and it only works on 10mbps and half-duplex (in non-technical terms, the slowest setting and only one-way communications at a time rather than information flowing both ways at once) but it would be better than nothing.
