Reading Lois McMaster Bujold's latest, Diplomatic Immunity, in which Miles is summoned to Quaddiespace (see Falling Free and Borders of Infinity) and finds himself in yet another mystery.

p. 9: Interesting structure there. Looks like one long drawn-out sentance at first glance; proves to not be. (regarding Nikki's alone-ness, or lack thereof)

p. 98: Dubauer, eh? Familiar name. Any relative of the unfortunate Ensign of the same name?

p. 100: Kidnapping attempt?

102: Ah. Assasination. But of whom? Potentially Ker, I should think; it was the only one hit.

103: Ker is worried about its blood.

104: yep. it sure is.

113: Bel knows tricks to make any accounting department skreek. Security like a fish in water.

124: Eeek! The shadow of the Empress's dildo returns!

125: Interesting, though, that she should pick that name. Yep, Ba Dubauer was concerned about its blood being on the handkerchief...

133: Finally realizes the handkerchief. Blood, hm. Our oaths are bought and paid in it, betrayed in it.

I thought the same about Dubauer, but it proved to be a red herring.

Ooh...unless, of course, our Ensign Dubauer's Betan ID was easy to steal because he's a drooling vegetable. That would jive.

Yeah. Long-lived, of about the correct age, doesn't make waves with the security folks... nobody knows him... probably easy enough to arrange that he "go to a sex-change clinic"...
