The guy who helped me swap over some of my information listened to me ranting rather patiently, and made an oblique reference to other customers having told him to shove certain things in certain places.

I gave him yet another complaint about the shoddy printing of the Dell "service tag" -- Tigereye's has become completely illegible.

Hopefully this time, they will get everything right and I will actually get the part in question ...

Ohhhhh, now the truth comes out. if I just order the adapter, the order will be cancelled.

I am exceptionally angry. I'm bitchy enough to be asking for supervisors, and supervisors of supervisors.

The fuckers hung up on me.

Oh, they tried... that's the failure mode of the adapter: when you have bare wireage on your power adapter at the place where it plugs in to your computer, it does deliver nasty shocks...

If this is what I think it is, it means your laptop is another of the laptops which secretly wants more support, like that offered by a table. When you (I'm ignoring the idea of "if you") get the new part, make sure that the power cord is supported for a distance by your knees/legs when you sit. My laptop's power cord is fine on this, but its ethernet and modem dongles need back support (I've already broken one modem adapter this way), so I'm used to thinking about it.

It's probably what you think it is.

I'm usually pretty good about it, but I've not been the only user of the laptop. Casts glare in general direction of Brian.... That is pretty much the problem, yes. Nice large dongle.

(Who the hell came up with that name, anyway? My father thinks it sounds obscene, and as his daughter, I would have to agree with him.)

Getting the new part is not the issue. I *will* have a power cord for my dear laptop. How I get the part is another story. I may have present part repaired; I may buy another part; I may buy another part from another source.
