I saw that the lady who hands out the prizes was in the building, so I paused by the door of her temporary office and told her how much I was appreciating Fruitz. She was happy to hear that. She really loves her job -- she gets to make so many people happy.

Suggestion for me to write up properly: make site search topic remember last thing searched on. Because if you're going to be searching for one, you're probably going to be searching for more -- or at least look into the site stats and see if user data bears out that assumption of mine. Because if it does, it would make sense to do that, then. (Waiting until someone is up to give me the OK on it, because I have unmoderated access to post.)

The latest 'Zero Tolerance' debacle -- upstate New York school security guard asks teenager if she has her period, because she wouldn't be allowed to carry her purse otherwise. So of course the kids are showing solidarity and visibly wearing menstruation paraphernalia. Via Pandagon.

Ew. (Seriously.) Brain-eating amoebas, and it's *local*.

Am intermittently shuffling boxes. Have packed a box of kitchen things.

I saw those brain eating amoeba. That's just nasty. Evolving microbes scare me.
On that note, did you know that brewer's yeast can survive in cuts on your body and keep trying to produce alcohol with the sugars in the exposed blood? Yeah. Maybe I should stop breeding my brewers yeast for hardiness. It makes higher alcohol content, but I'd like to prevent the sugars in my body from being converted.

Apparently Sam Adams brewery has a yeast that can do 40% alcohol and only then cease to be happy about the alcohol content.
I had to stop the yeast in my cut the same way I'd stop it in a brew I was doing- raise the alcohol content.
A few generations before, they'd been standard yeast. And we wonder how brain eating amoeba just pop outta nowhere.

oh hai. Are you bleeding from your vagina? ok then, carry on.

I would totally do that if I were a teenage boy at that highschool.

What? I dated a theatre make-up student at that point in my life. It had its applications for driving school administration crazy.
Well, actually, I never used her talents. I had my own ways of driving them appropriately mad. Administration didn't like me, but they couldn't maltreat me the way they did other dissenters- there were written instructions on file at the office that I could not be disciplined without my parents attourney present, complete with his contact information.

btw, were the West Valley administration complete jackasses when you went there?

Dare I ask what he did?

Sven got caught making a taser in shop class. And many other things.
Big surprise he now does hobbyist rail guns in the basement.

These are bad, but not worse (IMO) than some stuff that's been around for a long time, like Mycobacterium leprae or Streptococcus pyogenes.

Yeah... I think what it was is just that, at least here, they had a big headline about "BRAIN EATING"... something, and immediately that grabs your attention. I imagine it was similar in other places as well.

btw, shiny new word you'll be able to make much use of: Neepery.

http://catb.org/jargon/html/N/neep-neep.html

neep-neep: /neep neep/, n.
[onomatopoeic, widely spread through SF fandom but reported to have originated at Caltech in the 1970s] One who is fascinated by computers. Less specific than hacker, as it need not imply more skill than is required to play games on a PC. The derived noun neeping applies specifically to the long conversations about computers that tend to develop in the corners at most SF-convention parties (the term neepery is also in wide use). Fandom has a related proverb to the effect that “Hacking is a conversational black hole!”.
