This was over the phone. I wrote it up in one of the journals that lurks in the lair of my old room at my parents' house.
I evidently hushed Shanna, you probed for details, I spilled it, that she'd wanted to know if you'd marry us, you politely declined, and I was surprised to be somewhat disappointed.
Must have blended in with the rest of the flirting. Shawn was trying to program a space game on his '82 at the time.
Not sure if my memory was jogged by this or it's just a clear enough image, but I can vividly remember/imagine that. One of my behavioral principles seems to be "When you have no idea what to do, be polite." It -- well I would say that it never escalates situations, but it escalates situations in which other people have lost their tempers at me quite nicely. It's not a bad fallback. Just a little odd sometimes. Although I guess any response of mine would have been odd.
Next time I've got a Miss Manners book in hand I'll have to look that up. She's got one about love/sex/marriage. "How to respond to unexpected proposals." It would probably involve origami with one's greeting card.
It was the nicest rejection I've ever gotten then, and still is now, bar a few moments with Darkside, but yours was overall nicer because I hadn't much romantic energy invested in the idea of dating you.
"How to respond to unexpected proposals" -- why do I see Miles? Why, oh why?
...For Valentine's day, along the Milesian theme, I gave Darkside a packet of hair elastics. Nice, friendly, personal, and not overblown on the whole "love" thing. Wrapping paper? Made myself, with a design of hand grenades, bombs, dynamite, small explosions, and hearts.
Um, just a bit of random advice, but most people try dating *before* proposing.
*more ducking. I seem to be ducking a lot lately*
I don't think Ekaterin's response was necessarily a bad one. Can you imagine her saying "No thank you. Please pass the bug butter."? That's a decent response to a non-serious proposal, but...
I've always wondered what happened when someone did the proposal over the carnival microphone thing when the other person involved wasn't quite ready yet. "Dear, we need to talk" seems inadequate.
Usually I do date before proposing. Dated Emily, after all, and then was seeing Brian, and was technically dating him before he finally proposed to me. Never proposed to Darkside. Probably never will. Not unless things change drastically. I did propose to him the idea of dating, which was shot down with large flaming missiles.
Actually, I was thinking of Ekaterin's proposal to Miles, and his utter unpreparedness for it.

Easy pop quiz, basically.

Once Cordelia and Lady Alys get through completing her training and polishing the edges, Ekaterin's going to be even more of a force to deal with.

I pointed out the hearts.
He was satisfied.
