LiveJournal Advisory Board Elections

I support legomymalfoy to be my representative on the Advisory Board.

Of all the candidates, I think she will do the best job. A number of my fellow volunteers and I also support imc and tango, who I also feel would do a good job.

I do not think jameth would take the post seriously, and I think LJ is a little more than a giant joke.

I read this sentence three times and it kept not making sense to me because I kept reading it "I think LJ is little more than a giant joke".

That one little word "a" really makes all the difference!

I'm trying to not be helplessly angry. I'm hoping that if he should happen, gods forbid, to win, that he will be otherwise incapable, and LJ will go with the next one up.

leora did have a good point - Support already has a decent amount of say - and I think it's a little sad that events up to a certain point have pushed Support to the point where we're thinking that our best option is to get a member on the board.

I don't really know current LJ politics, but my experience of Support versus LJ Staff was that Support has, over time, become more listened to and better treated, and that is a trend I expect will continue. When I was in Support and jproulx was staff, he did listen and care about Support, but for the most part there were big issues with Support being ignored or misunderstood. Later, when Rahaeli got hired and later with Burr86 and now Coffeechica it has significantly increased the extent to which Support is taken seriously and understood and has a voice. I can't imagine that Carrie doesn't have a good grasp on what Support is like and that its needs are important, and as she is staff, I expect she'll have far more influence than any advisory board member, because even though I expect they will talk to and listen to the advisory board, they are simply not going to keep them as well informed or have them as involved as a staff member. I really think that Carrie is Support's best voice with LiveJournal and Support does have that.

Besides, LJ cannot afford to not listen to Support or Abuse to the same extent that it can other groups. Although Abuse ~will~ get listened to. Unless things have changed dramatically, Abuse will always be taken seriously and given at least some amount of a voice. It's just that Abuse doesn't set policy. It's much more like a police officer... the Abuse Team enforces the policies and gets blamed for them, but it doesn't generally set them except in very small ways. They're really set by the people LJ considers to be qualified to judge the legality of things, as well they should be. But people always blame the Abuse Team, and often they blame them for enforcing things that are actually illegal, when really US law has a lot of areas that ought to be improved. But do they get up in arms at the law and write to their senators? No, they write in to LJ. But that's really a bit of a side-track.

It's been my perception that ever since the 6A takeover, the amount of attention paid at higher management levels to policy-type Support issues has been declining, despite the best efforts of Rah and then Carrie to make our perspective heard. Technical problems, no problem. Policy issues? I did not get the feeling that these were coming through so loud and clear.

Governance of Support itself, I feel, has been getting only better. But Support's feedback on policy issues -- I think 6A had a crew of highest-management who thought they knew best. I'm hoping current highest-management respects Support's input on matters of policy as well as technical matters.

That may well be. That's sad.

Support will re-earn it if LJ stays in the hands of one company long enough. It'll earn it the same way it did the first time, as it used to have none. And it earned by showing time after time that it would have been a really good thing for Support to have that voice.

And it's a lot easier for Support to get to that point than any other group on LJ, but it's really sad if the old lessons get unlearned. Although Brad is on the Advisory Board, and while he doesn't understand Support, he does understand that pissing off Support en masse is a bad idea. Still, that's not the same thing, and it'd depend how much staff members like Carrie get to talk to the Advisory Board to give them that perspective to consider.
