Context is not important, other than that some real-world events can be defined as "grinding", but do not have a progress bar. I point out, well, one may create one's own. As witness:

I was looking around for a little whiteboard when I came up with the idea, but the only one was the largeish one on the wall. If I were going to do this often, I'd want a little whiteboard with a permanent bar on it that I could fill in with fun markers.

There was also one where they used a white piece of paper and a CD case, but I couldn't find it. I think that might be easier to write on/rub off.
