sofiaviolet said it best: Skeevy fanfiction survey is skeevy. I don't believe that the study people are actually studying fandom; I believe they are using fandom as an easy pool of suckers who like porn; it looks as though their intent is to study the reaction of people and porn.

That is really disappointing, and an affront to legitimate fan studies (which, yes, is really an area of research). Way to ignore *all* previous research done on fandom. It's called a literature review, kids -- read a book before you start researching :-P

And the sad thing is, if this researcher had said up front, "I am doing research on human sexuality and would like to include the fandom community as it is a community that is open and accepting of erotic materials", they probably would have gotten a warm and welcoming response.

Well, until they followed that up with such an... interesting survey, that is. The US-centrism of it, for example, is the *least* of its problems.

And skeevy thing is skeevy, though I'm also having a few srs thoughts about the study of fandom wrt it--but I agree with your general assessment.

Isn't it totally awesome?

Someone was making noise about wanting something like that, other people were wondering how exactly it would in fact be done due to the fact that crossposted content is generally kind of static, and then I remembered how WordPress blogs do it (with a dynamic image) and it wound up in bugzilla and someone implemented it and voila here it is.


Fandom and sexuality is a fascinating topic of potential study, and if you do wind up doing something with it I would be absolutely fascinated to see what comes out.

I recently participated in someone's study about reactions to LJ's abrupt layoffs, and the process was really, really interesting; I want to see the finished paper as soon as possible, because I'm curious to see what kind of information she's going to pull together.
