It's that time of year again! It's northern-hemisphere winter, but the light will regain its ground, and so progresses the wheel of the year.

Happy Yule to those who celebrate (Happy Litha to those who celebrate down thattaway), and Happy Solstice to everybody else. :D

Solstice: longest night and shortest day, or shortest day and longest night, depending on what part of the year you're in and what part of the Earth you're on. Two per year, December and June.

Yule: pagan celebration of the winter solstice.
Litha: pagan celebration of the summer solstice.

My dad would always throw a party for both, even though the family was ostensibly Christian (Quaker on Dad's side, some random form of Protestant on Mama's). It's sort of not a surprise that I grew up pagan.


Happy present time!

Mama would always have the 12 Days of Christmas for us, and kick it off on the Solstice. We got books. Lots and lots of books. Kept us out of trouble for vacation.

My father had religion shoved up his nose as a kid, so he made the decision to not make that same mistake with us. Plus our options were fairly limited in Fairbanks.

My father also thought church groups were good places to Meet Boys, but I think I've done all right in the bringing of Boys home from the internets. (Okay, so mostly I've got a little brother out of it, but hey.) (And we shan't talk about Bringing Boys Home from NaNoWriMo; after a while the Phoenix writers group decided that there was to be No More Of That, after one of them turned out to be a rapist, one turned out to be a psycho passive-aggressive emotional abuser, and one of them was AK-47 Guy.)

Oh crap, it is, too! I guess I tend to forget occasions that don't make me afraid to set foot in a store, or have giant inflatable decorations associated with them.

I tend to wax occasionally obnoxious to the poor Christians and Secular Christmas celebrants by wandering into some mall on the 22nd-24th completely innocent of any need to rush, acting startled when people mention that there's some sort of time limit before a major holiday. For my major holiday is already complete.

It's a form of schadenfreude, I think.

Happy back at ya! Although, I celebrate both having Christian family and so am constantly behind. Hey, do you have an address where I can send a card, only if you want of course. Didn't wish you to think you were forgotten. I do still miss you at writer's
