Our strength is in community. I started thinking about the specific factors that have made my life not the general pit of suck that high school was, and it all comes down to freedom of choice, and people.

The choices you're stuck with in middle school, high school, are pretty limited. What to wear to school today. Whether to do your homework now, or later. What to spend your allowance on, assuming you've got one. Who to hang out with at school. Who to hang out with outside of school, transportation and assorted parents permitting.

Even in college, you don't always have those kinds of choices. You get assigned shitty roommates, you have certain classes you have to take, you're mostly stuck at the same school until you finish your program or until you decide to leave.

Today: intended to get car seen to; felt horrid and went back to bed. Went on a walk with aunt & poodle, then to Trader Joe's. [personal profile] norabombay called; many chattings were had. [personal profile] zarhooie's phone is b0rked; she gets a new one on Tuesday. Aunt is being understanding about Car Woez; I shall be pried out of bed tomorrow morning for Farmers' Market, and thence to car place. And then: EPIC SHOPPING.

Today: got up early after 4 hours' sleep to go to a (different, tiny) Farmers' Market with aunt. Had high hopes of Getting Stuff Done with Tif later in the day. Loaded flat tire into the back of her SUV. Got nectarines and grapes, looked at strawberries longingly, but too expensive and it's the end of their season. Aunt heard weird slapping noise from car. Checked tires at filling station: screw. Requisite puns were made. Her tire was still full, though, and we had fruit and also dog stuff, so she chanced driving home. Uncle was on a conference call when we got in. Dog shenanigans were fun, if cold (all foggy and fall weather), 1 person this week. The dog has not quite got the connection between "I do this thing" and the click, though she's got click/treat down pat. She's a lovely waggy black lab bitch, and Mr. Poodle puts up with dicklicking from her. (Mr. Poodle is gay.) They played nose-the-milk-jug-cap with her, to try to make that connection in her head. The "I broke the milk!" anecdote is still amusing. Deacon was unfairly penned up inside. Deacon does not like it when other dogs get the attention he should be getting, and demand-barks even though it does not get him what he wants. (We ignore it, as well we should. Though he is an old dog and set in his ways.) I hope it did not disturb uncle too much. Dog stuff finished up. Aunt drove off for car place with Mr. Poodle; I stayed behind reading. Uncle came back from tango; aunt walked back with Mr. Poodle from the car place. Lunch ensued. Uncle napped; aunt and I read. Car place called back: aunt's tire was all ready, mine was not: it was a weird size, and they could order it and have it on Tuesday. Whee. Texted Tif to apprise her of the situation. Uncle drove me home & aunt to car place. I came home, caught up on some internet, got all's-well text back from Tif, and went down for a much-needed nap.

Code push tomorrow is going to give me a much-needed spamwhacker Making Your Life Easier tool -- two of them, actually. Which just goes to show that I need to migrate more of the things that would make my life easier out of my brain and into Bugzilla, because that's what makes them happen. The devs cannot actually read my mind, not all of them.

[Also I plotted with Khas about possible H/D plots. Hee. And I saw stuff in changelog about the LJ twitter import, and had thinkythoughts. I am very well pleased with how [personal profile] wibbble has done mine. And I had thoughts about Spirit Day.]

There's an anonymous love meme going about. I see many people I know in the comments. I'm at http://meloukhia.dreamwidth.org/45029.html?thread=449765#cmt449765

Tif had loaned me The Hunger Games, and I finished reading it. It's a good solid book, and I feel that it would not have been helpful to me in my teenage years because it would have amplified my crazy like woah.

"Birds of Prey" has been earwoming me ever since [livejournal.com profile] shadesong posted it (and then more people followed suit).

Called best friend. He was gaming. He said he had to go (I said to have fun); "the guys" said that no, it was cool, he could take a few minutes. So he took a few minutes; we checked in, said hi; he had to get back before they did anything else to his character (they'd already spaced him once).

Had annoying computerfail. Noticed lack of DVD drive on reboot. Saw loose power connector. Cursed, located screwdriver, took off side of case (the fucker does not like to come off without the help of one of the mini crochet hooks that I don't know where is right now), dusted, checked cables, and fired 'im back up. Running like a dream, 'e is. Fucker. (Took a screenshot with phone cam in case the save didn't take. Which it didn't. Fucker.)

Anyone who complains "It's not like this is your job! Why should you care about this?!" when someone gets all het up about social media privacy snafus, is entirely missing the point. A couple things.

Social media is actually some people's jobs -- not just creating the infrastructure, but using the social media tools in the process of doing whatever the hell it is that they do all day.

Until every workplace is understanding of all the random weird shit that people actually do get up to on the internet, and learns to ignore or treat harmless human quirks with tolerance, a social media privacy snafu could cost someone their job. The social media company probably does not care that LegolasLuvr1013 is Jane Doe from Springfield. They may in fact already know, if LegolasLuvr1013 ever had reason to pay them or give them some proof of age. The Springfield Church, where Jane works as the office manager, is not likely to be happy to hear that Jane spends some of her free time reading and writing Tolkien-smut, even though she's never done it from an office computer. Jane's ex-husband's lawyer is going to be delighted.

There's a 30 days worth of songs meme that's been going about my social groups. I don't think I have the attention span to work on that one, quite, but one of the items from it, a song that makes you want to have sex, fascinates and amuses me.

My answer to that question is possibly as weird as I am, but it's "Rocket Man". (Well, okay, there are a lot of random R.E.M. songs that make me think there's something better that I could be doing than writing, and certainly "The Bad Touch" made an impression on me after River had it on repeat that one time when he and I were getting it on.) But "Rocket Man" just has this ... thing.

Ah, I see that the ability to crosspost protected comments has now been removed for all users on LJ. There's still yelling in the news post about wanting an opt-out from crossposted comments entirely, and ... erm. I understand the dichotomy between public content and publicized content, but I am really kind of appalled by the viewpoint that the *only possible* reason for wanting to link to something from somewhere else is to make a mockery of it and attract trolls. Have these people no nice friends at all? Are the entirety of their friends' social networks contained on LJ with no offsite presence?

Monday: writing. Lots. Disrupted fucking sleep schedule.
Tuesday: Disrupted fucking sleep schedule. Woke up in time to go down to the car place with aunt and get the new tire put on my car. Played with their lovely refrigerator magnets.
Departed a bit too late for Glee night, as I'd gotten distracted by Very Interesting Stuff I Have Strong Opinions About. Nipped in to Safeway, got a veggie tray, cheese, sausage. Found parking uphill, zipped in just as the episode of Glee was starting.

I like Finn's narrative voice. I fucking adore the characterization in this series. Even while the people and the plot are enormously fucked up, they're lovely strong characters and so amazingly fucking distinct.

"Oh, the sandwich is a monkey's paw, great."

JD mentioned "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality", and apparently there is a lot more of the author in there than it might appear if you aren't actually familiar with the author. The thing where Death is the big bad? That's Very Much The Author Talking. I took the note in the story notes about "You can learn all about what Harry knows by following me home!" as a Warning, as that's An Advertisement, and the form of it also smells like there's timecubism at the other end.

I realized that the lounge in my apartment complex has a TV. It is becoming the location of choice for MythBusters-watching: it's right there, and I just have to walk there and back. No driving. No transit. There is a steeper hill, but it's a shorter walk all in all. I got to see myself on TV for perhaps 2 seconds. :D

Wednesday: more wrestling with the sleep schedule, more writing (nonfiction). Went to bed at a slightly-diurnal hour.

Thursday: Went to Farmers' Market with aunt; followed this up with Trader Joe's. Handed her the phrase "That doesn't sound very Christ-like" to use to annoy bigots who profess to be Christian.
She is delightfully atheist, although my uncle is a militant atheist. She has Opinions about those who use their religion as an excuse to be horrible.

Napped. Had a horrible dream, the sort that bends reality. This is on my list of top bad dreams of all time. Unlike the top two, I didn't wake up crying or needing to call somebody, so there's that.

Watched The Social Network.
