Return to Innocence
Shawn and I are talking again. Rather, we're IM'ing again on a fairly regular basis. He's making a movie; I'm not. He's got a laid-out plan for his career and a wife and a daughter; I don't. I don't really totally feel inadequate, though. I've done things with my life as well. They just aren't as immediately apparent.
All true wealth is biological. Traced through the paths of that with the help of Orson Scott Card and Shadow of the Hegemon as well as Cordelia. Our worth is measured in the eyes of ourselves, our friends, our enemies, our children. Without our children, there is no future.
We may write the songs that the children will sing, compile the books our children will read, bear the children themselves, teach the children, build a better world for the children -- who will then have children of their own. Even should you not bear your own children, to have been of lasting worth in that sense, it's to have done something to help the children.
Even if they're now grown.
Bouncing words back and forth off of Shawn, I feel the old dynamic snapping into place. Equal in talent and creativity, associating through choice, sharing and shoring up each other's weak spots.
I had a hand in shaping him to the man he is today and will be in the future; he had a hand in shaping me. Many hands.
We're each more than the other dreamed that we could be, today.
