Re: Asking for it, I came across (and commented on) this blog. It has been substantially re-written since then, but the original text is still in Google's cache. A perfect illustration of the dangers of such irresponsible reporting - so many influential people take the mainstream media at face value.

As a related aside, I went behind the paywall and dug out the paper on which the monkey grammar story is based. While I'm not qualified to critique the design of the study itself, I am satisfied that the BBC article fairly represents the authors' conclusions.
