Re http://failblog.org/?p=23328: I remember reading (I think in the SDM) a story about a hospital where SOP when decommissioning machines was to remove hard disks and hard-erase them by using the MRI device before reinstalling them in the case. One day, confronted with stuck screws, someone decided to dispense with the remove and reinstall steps, and to bring the case to the MRI scanner, not just the disk. That's when they found out:
- That the magnetic pull is strong enough to pull the case off the cart and wedge it tight into the magnet ring through a drywall.
- That once the case is wedged in, it's impossible to pull it out against the magnetic field without powering off the MRI unit.
- That after powering off the MRI, it needs to be recalibrated after power-on before it can be used.
- That field recalibration is a day's work (or so - memory tells me 12 hours) for a maintenance tech.
