I read a story in the New Yorker on people giving Martin grief over his slow writing and was thinking 'Wow, people in Fandom are much more reasonable!' And then reality slapped me upside the back of my head and I corrected myself to 'People I know in Harry Potter fandom are much more reasonable!'

I think you can possibly even take that to "people you know", because at least one friend of a friend fled screaming from Harry Potter fandom after having been hounded for updates to a particular eternal WIP...

People are very kind to me about how long it has taken to finish Fathers, bless them.

It wasn't Mirabella, was it? I must say that I would leap for joy were Shadow of his Wings ever completed, but it remains a masterpiece even in its unfinished form. I thought of her while reading that article, and also of Michelangelo -- at which point I had mental images of 16th century art fans meeting on the Ponte Vecchio to plan protests over all the unfinished sculptures and muttering crossly whenever they saw David.

No, actually, I was thinking of the epic Hermione/Snape fusion with Cyteen. Which is also a masterpiece in its unfinished form!
