Yay, Foreigner re-read! Even after the scheduled readalong. :D (I'm still hoping that I can spread the love of Cherryh far and wide before the next Yuletide... Heh.) How far along are you? Anything interesting you've noticed this time round?

Alaskan mosquitoes = OUCH. Those things have augers, not mere probosces!

I finished the whole thing. :D I noticed in particular how very much information about the societies are included in the various bits, yet somehow it doesn't seem like an infodump! I also noticed that the various descriptions of atevi skin color are not done in a fashion to make me want to hit people. Space-black. Very little of the overly-foodie comparisons that happen a little too often about skin tone without the people narrating being active foodies. (Me, I still think in terms of paint, and how I'd have to mix the color, and the color of the shadows and highlights. A theatre makeup person would probably think of pancake makeup. Only a coffee person should be making coffee comparisons to skin tone.)

I hadn't noticed that exactly -- interesting! I did notice that atevi weren't ever compared to human skin tones, but never really pushed that through to the actual terms often used for human skin tones...

And yes, comparing people to food makes me a little... eeeeh. Humanity: your fellow humans are not there to be consumed for your pleasure. Not even visually, or mentally.

I did notice one moment with what might have been a sidelong comparison to human skin -- mid-battle, someone's face is a color that "atevi rarely achieved" or some such -- but that could also be read as just a comment independent of human complexion as well.

If I'm remembering that scene correctly, I took it to mean that ateva's face had paled (he was injured? or just being fired at) as an emotional response... Significantly so, enough to alter his colour somewhat. Which, well, is that common language with humans of colour?

I think my subconscious went with the independent-of-humans idea, having already been told that most atevi don't show emotion if they can help it, so it could be that Bren was just startled to see any visible sign of reaction at all, even what might have been a mild one. Hmm...
