Pixi go bye-bye

So there I am Thursday night and [personal profile] zarhooie is calling. I can't find my football field1. By the time I've found it, the call's gone to voicemail. She rings me again. This time, as I'm fumbling the headset onto my face, the phone blinks and goes dark, and the familiar glowing white Palm logo appears. The thing's gone and done and rebooted on me.

It's always been a little stroppy, but this marks the first time it's actually crashed as the result of a phone call in. Kat keeps calling back, and she gets me as the phone's rebooting -- the screen is actually still on the logo, but thanks to the headset I can take the call. (Note to others: if your phone has done the same thing and now only displays one page of apps and widgets and settings, not the three it's supposed to have, reboot the fucker and don't answer any calls that come in while it's rebooting.)

I figure that enough actually *is* enough, and hie me on down to the phone shop the next evening after I get out of work2. The phone is not in fact three years old, it is the replacement from when its predecessor was pickpocketed from me. The cover is still coming loose, and the little magnet that is supposed to keep the flap over the charger hole was the first thing to go.

I look over the androids with the shop dude, and make my upgrade decision based on advertised battery life. Woo!

There is in fact nowhere that looks reasonable to hang my little cellphone charm bell off of at first. This was one of my requirements. There are two holes in the back, but they do not look as though they are designed to dangle a charm. The guy suggests the headphone hole, I could loop it around the thin edge of the case that's right there. I agree that this looks the most likely.

This process is perhaps more involved than is strictly necessary, and it becomes clear that while his dexterity is better, I'm the one with the spatial skills and the 3D modeling program in my head. I align the pieces. He snaps them home. My phone jingles merrily at me.

Later, I learn that the little holes in the back are in fact the other microphones, for better noise reduction, and there's no actual place that you ought to be able to use to hang a charm from the thing. This sound is the jingle of victory.

I spend a peaceful evening with the guys, exploring all the new things.

I have yet to name the phone. It's a Motorola Photon.

1: Bluetooth headset. From "You had to run all the way across a football field to get your headset!" when the charger lived on a plug on the other side of my actually very tiny studio apartment.

2: Well, first I have to pick up my car from the shop. They still can't manage to duplicate the sound that's alarming me, but I've narrowed it down to a strong correlation with the brakes, and the lady advises that some brake noise does occasionally happen, and they've adjusted the brakes. So I'm feeling OK.

They've stopped putting places for phone charms on handsets these days. I guess they fell out of fashion - probably Apple's fault for pushing sleek lines, etc.

Yay, phone! Photon is an awesome name in and of itself... if you don't mind naming a phone after something that's's got particle-wave duality and no rest mass.

Some phone cases have a place for the charms to go, especially the supercute ones.

Well, I don't think photons can be charmed, only quarks...

I was just earwormed by "People are Strange". I love that song.

Does that make me honorary uncle or something? :-)

How could I have missed this totally plausible explanation! You win one internets.

Agreed on the cases - I was happy to find the case I'd bought for my Razr had a little spot for charms/straps, because the actual phone doesn't (and neither did my HTC Magic - I think it's a smartphone trend)

Brakes make all kinds of noises. When I don't use my car for a few days and it sits, using it again makes the brakes scream an unholy noise for the first few presses.

Did you recently have stuff done to your brakes? This is another popular cause of brake noises.

The first thing that came to mind was that 'otlh is the Klingon word for photon, though I don’t suppose that helps naming it.

If you are not into putting your phone in a case.

I've seen another kind of thing like this in-person that was more of a suction cup dealio, but I haven't the foggiest how to search for it.
