It is great! I still need the cane if I am walking a significant distance or on uncertain ground or on things like stairs, but it is for intermittent support rather than constant use. I also suspect that after having had a cane, I will continue to keep one on me for some time, even as I improve past the point where I was prior to picking up the cane.

I rather regret giving mine away, as over the last 10-odd years there have been some days when I have not done much because I couldn't, whereas with a cane, I could have. But then I weigh that up against would I have thought that I could run if I had kept hold of the cane, and I am not sure. I think it's one of those balances everyone works out for themselves and even then, there's no perfect answer.

I know I'll need a cane back at some point as I age, unless I have more surgery, and plan to wave it and say 'Damn kids!' a lot by then ;-)

I'm thinking that so long as I stay mindful to double-check my limits without the cane, and to consciously engage in self-driven physical therapy of the "now let's see if we can take a few more steps without" type, I can avoid some of the problems I might otherwise collect.

That's what works! I only get into real trouble when I listen to the part of my brain that says 'You can totally walk three miles in those shoes!' Heels are a sometimes shoe, preferably a sometimes with taxis to and from, I know this.
