At least according to the idea of Scottish dress which was basically invented by people like Walter Scott and had no real link to what had gone before.

The old-style kilt was banned during the Highland Clearances as part of an attempt at cultural genocide. Fast-forward to the Victorians, who had a revival in 'Scottish culture', which included them creating an entirely new idea of the kilt.
The traditional idea of Scottish culture was largely made up, but most people - even here - aren't really aware of it.
Having said that, we did watch guys in kilts beating each other with swords and axes last night. :oD
