Hobbity thoughts

Overall, I enjoyed it, and by careful monitoring of my liquid intake, I neither exploded nor had to take a break.

I'm not familiar enough with the source (read it once) to have Decided Opinions about the translation to film.

Enjoyed the dwarf invasion of Bilbo's home, though the whole sequence left me variously cringing. Was concerned for the health of the dwarves tied to the spit over the fire every time the trolls stopped cranking. Enjoyed the exploration of the exact source of the name "oakenshield", because lol, big fuckin' branch. And then later, what looked to be that same branch with metal bits added on, whee! The dwarf beard jewelry was excellent, and I may recommend it to my father (the family Tolkein geek) because he occasionally waxes enthusiastic about various methods of masculine personal adornment.

If you're looking to take a short intermission during the film, I have a suggestion, though it may be a bit early.

Overall I did not particularly need the Radagast the Brown bits, and could have skipped them usefully. Important things to know: there is evil and decay in the forest, it is found to be of magical source, and there are big fuckoff spiders invading. Radagast the Brown is the hedgehog-hugger.

Also, I could have stood to miss the bit with the bird's nest under his hat, because that made it clear that the previously unidentified white stripe down the side of his faaaaaace is bird shit.

So on the whole, you can take off for the bathroom at that point and be confident in Not Missing Much At All.

So I think I can start talking to my friends again now...

Thank you for the loo-break info! That is some awesome knowledge to have!
