I once named a mail server "weasel".

"Siderea," said my boss, "I see you set up that server, the one to provide an email alternative to our Lotus Notes server, for automation purposes."

"Yes, it's all ready to go."

"Siderea, why is it named 'weasel'?"

"We needed a POP server."

"So?"

"POP goes the weasel."

That is a perfect name.

My current laptop is named Guardian II. (Guardian I was a massive box from 1996.) "Azzie," asked my father. "Why do you say the PC should be named Guardian?"

"Because of the Guardian of Forever," I said. "'Let me be your Gateway.'"

So I went to the head of systems and explained I wanted to be able to ssh into my work machine, and that I'd be good and only use the VPN to access it and I would never telnet. Okay, that seems legit, he says. He'll assign me a fixed IP number. And what do I want for a host name?

"Oh. I hadn't thought about that. Er. Wait. Do you have a browser window open for me? Could you google something for me?"

"Sure. Shoot."

"'Murex'. Hit 'images'. A ha! 'Murex'!"

"It's a bunch of sea shells."

"Yes."

"A bunch of spiny sea shells."

"They're SECURE C shells!"
