I guess maybe the huge empty spot in his announcement rings louder in my ears because I work with addicts in various stages of recovery, and they are a population known for their weaseling, but: it's great that he will (he promises) no longer oppose the right to marry, but, as reported, there is no point in his announcement where he takes the least moral responsibility for opposing it in the first place, nor for the real and material harm that has come to others because of acts he has taken. He does not apologize for having been wrong, he does not apologize for having done wrong, and he offers to make no amends.
His moral character is identical today to the one he had on any of the days he voted to oppose it.
Which is not to say I don't appreciate it that he will no longer committing that harm. It is not to say I don't respect the courage it took to break ranks with his party and come out in favor of marriage equality.
But let us not confuse this with any substantive change or growth on his part. There has been no contrition, no remorse, and no amends. Like the mugger who stops mugging people due to the rising price of bullets, it's nice for us that he's stopped, but he's the same person he's always been.
