Craft day streaming

I'm not sure if what I'm looking for actually exists. I have a vague and cranky distaste for Twitch, possibly caused by the rampant fuckery on the platform and a certain kind of culture.

While I'm puttering around the basement and doing vague artistic-adjacent activities, I'd like to be At Home to callers. Ideally, only people I have previously added on some miscellaneous social media, even though I haven't managed to join all the places everyone is, and [insert opinions on Facebook here].

Last time I tried an At Home streaming thing on Google Meet, some rando whose name I didn't recognize joined and then sent me creepy messages, without my being able to see an ID to block, so I'm somewhat soured on that as a platform.

I have Discord, and family video groups are great, but I have more people to chat with than The Siblings. I don't want to have to start an All Azz's Friends discord server because that implies more social energy than I actually have.

In conclusion, ????

I have no answer but this is rtmi too, so I'll be watching the replies.

[Discord also doesn't work for video chat on anything but the Windows desktop client. That is, it's fine if the model here is "you, a Windows desktop client user, are streaming and your friends are watching", but disappointing if you wanted to see the faces of people on other clients.

Guess who went to a more-socially-distant-than-intended socially distant Halloween party this year? The best part was when nobody told me that you have to be able to view a stream in Discord [I was using the web client] to play Jackbox games. Hot tip: Drawful (like Pictionary) is more fun (if probably less funny for the other players) if you can see everyone else's drawings before you guess what they were supposed to be of.]

Tracking this because totally RTMI

That would be fun!

Maybe if you scheduled a closed Google Meet with an open 'would you like to do this post(s) ahead of time so you can send a link to the people you know are interested and set things up so you can approve/disapprove anyone else instead of them being able to join?

But that's ... more.

This is prompting me to consider being At Home on videochat while crafting myself so ... thanks.

Oh, argh! Good point!

...Huh I guess Azz and Silver aren't y'all's wallet names either, LOL. Forgot that.

Twitch streams can't be locked, anyway, so you'd get randos there too. When I've done this in the past it's been... idk whatever they're calling Google Hangouts these days, but I haven't tried it since they retooled it. I think you can do video chat with Discord group messages now (and fwiw, video chat works fine for me on Linux client too), but you're limited to... 10 or 15 people, I forget which. Zoom has been the go-to with my friends, but you'd have to share the link around beforehand, and I think there may be limits to session length if you don't have a work/school account.

Yeah, that was going to be my unfortunate guess. I never had issues with random people joining in the past but it's possible the interface has changed at this point.

TTBOMK, Discord suspended the voice/video limit for Covid-19.

Azz - is the problem setting up the Discord, or managing it afterwards?

Ah, here it is:

per https://twitter.com/discord/status/1255233817431941120,
Server Video on desktop is now rolled out to all servers with less than 1000 members.

You can video chat with up to 25 people, which has been upped from a 10 person limit during this time to help you see more of your loved ones’ faces ♡

Some friends and I have a standing Skype group video call; since mid-pandemic we've had a scheduled hangout once a week, but the group "call" stays visible in my skype all the time and I can join whenever, and it will tell me if there is someone in the call (I think if you have the mobile app, it sends a notification if anyone come online in a standing group.) That might do what you want? I don't know what the limit is for people on a skype call, though, you might want to invite more people than that - iirc we have six on ours but I think you can get more than that.

Could be worse, I mean, it legit did not occur to me at first that mail entering this house addressed to [redacted] might be meant for Azz, not Silver's evil ex

(in my defense I had already fetched mail multiple times that was addressed to Azure Lunatic…)
