I said goodbye, and then Mama and I talked for a while. I told her she should call my aunt, who hasn't got cell reception at her house, regardless of the hour. She was going to go do that, and then she called back unexpectedly. She said he must have taken his last breath while we were on the phone.

I wound up getting to say what I needed to say, as I called as soon as I saw Mama's message. It was less for my peace of mind at that point, and more for his. Whatever there was left of it. I'd done a lot of my processing in the years between the finding out about the stuff and the actual end, it turned out, to the point that when I mentioned my dad sometimes people were surprised that he was still living.
