I first met her on the Bujold email list in the time before LJ, so it was like she'd always been on the internet. She was vibrant, inventive, caring, and endlessly a delight to read. She'd write roundups of Australian politicians and parties, and even though I'm on the other hemisphere, I'd read them faithfully, because she put so much heart and vigor into it, and had such a clever turn of phrase. She baked, and her recipes always have notes on how they could be adapted to suit various dietary needs (or, occasionally, not, since sometimes the nuts are integral to the baking and it couldn't be made nut-free, etc). She never wanted anyone to come to a party and not have something lovely to eat, no matter the dietary restrictions. She made blacklight reactive jellies.
Her tales of work and departmental wrangling were a delight, and I quietly regarded her as a mentor there. Running a department the way she did was #goals.
I've been crying off and on all evening. She should have had much longer with us. Much, much longer.

But thank you for telling us about her, it's nice to learn what she was like.
I'm sorry for the loss to you and, it sounds like, so many people.

(She did an amazing review of one of my books for Smart Bitches, Trashy Books last summer, and her seeing what I was trying to do there, articulating it in ways I still come back to with delight and awe, and just being so joyful about it vastly improved my last year in so many ways.)
