In any case, I told the security guard that I smelled gas by the meat coolers, Belovedest told someone in the front end, and I called the (somewhat exasperated with me, evidently) non-emergency line. If they don't do anything about it, that's now their problem.

... no, you really don't. (Thinking of that guy in a train trying to fit a gas can nozzle into a refillable lighter's valve when the two had incompatible cross-sections, eventually resulting in a 6"ish radius fireball and him being frogmarched out of the train.)

That's not a great thing anywhere, but on a train is very not great.
