Gel nail polish o'clock

I re-did my nail polish on December 28 because my left middle finger's nail had slightly torn a little below where I could have cut it usefully. Gel polish is good for stabilizing a nail, it turns out. So there I went.

Did I mention I'd got a gel polish kit? I got a gel polish kit, and it's probably going to be one of my new preoccupations for a little while. I have not yet progressed to mixing my own glitters into polish, but that surely can't be that far off. I have a light and the basic set of colors that came in the kit with the light, plus a few bonus colors (okay, opalescent and black) and an array of little charms to put into the manicures. And the glue to go with those. I have not yet purchased any charm spinners, but that might be on the list if my nails are supposed to be fidget objects as well as hardened and protected (ish).

Alcohol pads to clean the nail and make sure it's not oily or dirty.
Base coat, because gel polish needs base coat to adhere to.
Cure in the lamp. My lamp has both auto-on when you put a thing under its dome, and timed lights. I like to use the timers because ADHD. Though I also will put my hand in and withdraw it when the pain from the heat of the curing goes away. Did you know that this shit heats up when it cures? IT DOES.
The light yellow polish that I thought I'd never be able to use. This is my third rodeo.
Cure again.
Was that even? Second coat. Cure again.
Glitter time! This is a New Year's Eve manicure, and I want GLITTER. So, gold glitter (that's why the yellow base, after all). Cure.
Second coat of glitter. Cure.
Tested the matte topcoat on my thumb. Cured that. I wasn't the most impressed ever, but now I know how it looks, and I might be able to use it again.
Art time. Did a little coat of glossy top on my left index finger, without curing. Placed a hollow triangle, and two small rhinestones, and a little bitty domed oval, to represent a champagne glass, bubbles, and the stem of the glass. After putting them in more or less the right place, cure. Then the glue as a dome? Cured that. Did two rhinestones on my left little finger then, with somewhat more assurance.
Placed two smaller triangles, one hollow and one textured, on my right index finger, and a rhinestone. Didn't seem to need a glue dome. (The textured triangle fell off on NYE, so I did in fact need a dome.)
Topcoated and cured everything.

Much better cuticle avoidance this time. Aside from the textured triangle falling off, it's stayed intact so far, and I've only had to do a little filing to smooth things that have grown out and to flatten the edges of the place where the triangle used to be. The champagne glass on my left hand looks more like a martini, oh well.

Good to know that trick. I have to preemptively cut my thumbnails to nothing, or they WILL break a full 1/8th of an inch in the quick.

this is fascinating and so important! Thanks for posting the links.

no pics of your nails? I know imgur is kind of a pain, so no stress if it's inconvenient.

That is a good thing to know!

(getting my nails gel-polish manicured is one of my occasional treats)

Your NY manicure sounds awesome!
