I did my quasi-annual (I'd skipped a few years) re-read of Cyteen this week, and I was getting odd bits of resonance in my head at certain Florian II and Catlin II moments, a weird familiarity that had nothing to do with having read the book easily ten times. (Did I find a dodgy "ebook" site and grab their clearly OCR HTML version? You bet I did. And I was able to decipher most of the recog-o's because I knew what they should say.) But who were they reminding me of? It had to be someone else fictional. Two someone else fictional. Two someone else fictional who come as a set, never apart.

Finally, ding-ding-ding:

Of course I was primed to love Camilla and Palamades as soon as I met them. I'd imprinted on a publicly-impassive accomplished fighter, with her technician partner with a pocketful of gadgets and wires. There was no escape for me.

Different in many important ways, but holy crap. (Florian and Catlin would never do a Paul unless it was a matter of survival, but I think Camilla and Palamades were heading there as soon as Pal realized it was an option.)
