4 color printing, with cardboard

When [personal profile] alexseanchai had to skip the program on making hand-stamped wrapping paper, I allowed as how I knew a thing or four about improvising stamps and doing tiny printmaking. And then bodies were, alas, fuckin' bodies.

So a good portion of this evening was consumed between me alternately saying things to cardboard, scissors, and glue sticks (none of those things being complimentary) and me saying things to computers (for a bullet journal layout that I was trying to print, also not complimentary and eventually involving Belovedest).

Lessons learned:

The usual number of candles on a cupcake is 1, but why not leave a place to stamp/paint/draw a number for subsequent birthdays?
For items with internal holes, try the hole punch
For items with not-small-circle-shaped internal holes, the important thing is that the end result is pasted closely together; it doesn't have to be cut out in a single piece
Carving lines for the crinkles on the cupcake case does not work like that on cardboard; just cut strips of cardboard and paste them on; this is not linoleum
I need a deeper stamp than I thought I did, but two layers of thick cardboard are generally sufficient for the backing/handle
I should not stack objects like that to carry them up the stairs (the box of dry tempera cakes slid off the shiny plastic of the tempera cake "muffin" tray, popped open, and rolled down the stairs shedding tempera cakes right and left)
A utility knife is not an adequate substitute for a precision craft knife, but they can be used
Don't try to cut the shape OUT in one piece with that utility knife vs the cardboard, just carve it into pieces too tiny to stay in place and then scrape them out
It works better when you have the correct IP address for the printer
I estimated the length of each portion of cupcake pretty well for the paint pour onto the paper plate (candle flame, candle length, frosting, case)
Spruce or pine actually does better with a royal blue and yellow mix than it does with bright green
We need a runbook for certain kinds of network shenanigans, probably
If the stamp isn't well-enough defined, then painting the "ink" onto it with the dinky kid's paintbrush works better than dipping it, yeah
Printing out that image works better when the measurement is 8.5" x 11", in inches, not the number of centimeters that it would be, but specified as inches
My machine needs rebooting more often than it gets rebooted, probably, and I'm not doing that tonight
Due to the properties of cardboard, the ribbon bow looks more like a pair of scissors
Sometimes we paint directly on the paper if the stamp isn't working great, but the stamp does give us a starting place
THE FOUR COLOR CUPCAKE LOOKS BADASS (even if it does look a little like the bubble light ornaments from Mama's tree)

Dear gods, hashtag-xmas-mood, and fiercely. I do love doing crafty things, but by and large that's usually not about doing crafty things so much as having done crafty things.
