Gamers!
Votania and Marx are plotting a Tunnels & Trolls game. I got to help with the calculation of stats.
Nephew wasn't particularly thrilled about going to bed when Mommy and Uncle Marx were not going to bed yet. I tucked him in and told him the story of how Raven put the stars and moon and sun in the sky, and made his feathers all black.
I've been quoting Bujold randomly.
Life around the household has returned to peacefulness. Votania's still exhausted easily, and takes naps; I've informed her that drawing energy from me is all right, just leave me enough to function with.
We will be re-arranging the living room, and making the high counter more accessible, then lining up the appliances there. I have collected us a lot of kitchen equipment. Next on my list for buying kitchen treats will be the steak-spiker, a deadly-looking implement similar to a potato-masher, but instead of a round thing with holes, the round part has long pointy spikes, like fat nails, which are pounded into the steak to completely make it submit and tenderize. Votania's favorite utensil.
I see Darkside tomorrow morning. I shall have to help him work on Selena Garrett's backstory.

Honest.
My "pickled steak" recipe is as follows:
Ingredients: 1 1 lb or so 1-1 1/2 inch thick london broil or steak; 2 tsp tarragon; 2 tsp minced garlic (dry, or half that, fresh); enough apple vinegar to cover
Step 1: (and this is what bears on your post): Place steak on sturdy (and clean) surface. Holding it down with one fork, repeatedly stab the meat with another fork. Screaming repeatedly during this is encouraged -- it's a ritual to claim the kill. (If you killed the animal in the first place, no need to claim it again.) Repeat this with both sides of the meat, until it looks pretty perforated, or you're just tuckered out.
Step 2: Place steak and spices into a largish zip-locked baggie, and pour in enough vinegar to cover it all. Swoosh it around to mix a little. Orally suck the air out of the bag and immediately zip it shut. Shake bag a bit to stir a bit more.
Step 3: Place bag in fridge to marinate, for 3-24 hours. Shake every so often.
Step 4: Broil as steak. (My favorite method is to place portabello mushroom caps onto the broiler, some asparagus spears on those, and the steak on top. Flip the steak only.)

We'll have to try that recipe. My favorite is my father's teriyaki steak (soy sauce, garlic, onion, green onion, 5-spice, ginger, brown sugar), but there are other ways to cook it... mmm.
