DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.php(This example lifted from my own httpd.conf file - it checks 'index.html', then 'index.htm', and finally, if there's no static content, it goes for 'index.php'. This makes sense for me, given that the primary uses for my web server are sharing files to the local network, and playing with PHP.)
I believe, but am too lazy to test, that this would also work when placed in a
.htaccessfile.
