A note on pop culture

I don't watch award shows, neither the Oscars nor the Academy Awards. I can barely tell which show is which. I am vaguely certain that one of them or the other is the Golden Globe, but fuck me if I know which.

Since I grew up sans TV, much of pop culture looks vaguely alike and vaguely boring. I can't tell any of the members of Boyband Du Jour apart, and I think that Britney Spears is pretty hot wearing that snake in that one thing, or at least she would be if she spelled better. I only know her name because it has been talked about so many times that I can't help but remember it. That Idiot Shawn was aghast that I did not know who Sean Connery was. (He asked me something about him, and I answered, "Who's that?" He asked me if I knew who Sean Connery was. I said no. I was technically lying -- I was vaguely sure that he was some famous actor or other.)

just for info:

the "Oscar" is the statue given at the Academy Awards.

and you make this particular brand of cluelessness adorable.

*grin*

i am over by the other end of the spectrum. my brother and i snuck out of bed to watch MTV go on the air. pop culture nostaligia shows make me all happy and tingly, and i scare myself when it comes up in trivia contexts.

but.. i knew i was getting old when i started refering to *all* of the music that had come out in the pervious year as "that song" because i couldn't tell the difference beyond the gender of the 'artist' from one to another.. and when the only movies i was aware of in-theatre/on video status of were animated and often from Disney.

heh.

I don't care much for awards shows. Or the post-award shows. Or the pre-award shows. Or the commentary the next morning about the previous night's award shows. Or what so-and-so wore to the freakin' awards show, or who they were with. The last time I watched the Academy Awards with any real interest was when Silence of the Lambs was nominated for everything, because I was fascinated with all things Thomas Harris. I don't even remember what year that was. '94 or '95, I think.

I could care less about the Golden Globes, the Tonys (well, I care about them, but not enough to watch them), and all the other awards shows. I care about the Emmys when something I like (something on the order of liking of, oh, ST:TNG, when I was a Trekkie) is nominated for a big award.

The Oscars are different. It was one of the few shows ever where my parents allowed us to eat dinner in front of the TV when I was growing up. (Off-hand, the only other show I can remember is Anne of Green Gables.) It's always been a group thing, and if I could find people willing to come over and make catcalls at outfits and guess at awards, I would. TV can be a group activity, if it's done right.

I know who Sean Connery is! (Of course, I only know because I think he's hot. There are probably under 50 actors I could name on sight. Sad, given that I did /not/ grow up without TV.)

Heh. That seems to be one of the ways I learn who actors/actresses are, too. Sean Connery...yummmm....
