Most of the time I leave the seat down as I leave.

If I'm visiting a place where it is seen fit to exhort the leaving the seat down, I will put the lid down, too.

I leave the lid down because of paranoia that my cats will fall in. Besides, Spot is inordinately fond of perching on the toilet seat and waiting for me to leave the shower.

Suggestion: for many such things, some measure of how much you care about them would be useful. (For example, there is a relevant difference for potential roommates between someone with strong feelings on the position of the trinary operator and someone who leaves it one way by default when living alone, but will adjust habits if roommates care.)
