Great. Do you know if there's going to be any compensation to balance that out? As in, a raise in the base pay? ((As an aside to below commenter, it must be nice to live in a place where thirty five hours is *full time*...))
You know that phrase about sinking ships? I get the idea that any & all supervisors who had benefits but who are going to get those pulled are scrubbing off their resumés, polishing their whiskers for interviews, and going in search of better cheese.
Cubicle Management said in the little meeting about the changes that if any of the supervisory staff felt that this was exploiting their talents & skills unfairly, then said supervisory staff would be welcome to step into a less demanding position, like back on the phones.
On the other hand (paw?) one of the things the other phone centers do is conduct training when dialing hours are scarce. Snarky Lady Supervisor/Monitor/Trainer and a few other people are headed off to some of the other phone centers to observe and learn how they conduct things. The idea is, when things on the phones are slow, grab some of the people who really need help/practice on specific issues, like averting refusals and so forth, and go and work on that. Like Bad Respondent: The RPG!
At least in theory, the idea is that while it may not be over 35 hours except in case of Really Busy, it also would not fall under ~30 (am completely guessing at the lower limit) because they evidently have a far, far, far better training/uptraining/continuing training process.
The other thing is Teams. Everything's going to get split up into 4 teams, a Dayshift team, a $ISSUE_SIDE_JOB (teens) team, a Dendarii Brewing Company team, and an $OTHER_SIDE_JOB team (adults). So there are the same set of interviewers on a team, and the same set of supervisors and monitors. So while it may be Musical Supervisors, it'll be pulling from a smaller crew, who will have the opportunity to get really, really experienced on that one survey.
So there will never be a supervisor on the Dendarii Brewing Company job who doesn't know what to do about the Infamous Loop (the one that results when you ask "And what other kind of container?", the respondent says "I said it was in a 12oz longneck!", enter 12oz longneck, re-enter information, and get back to "And what other kind of container?" lather rinse repeat, when the correct answer is No Other Kind of Container, Dammit, We Already Answered For That) again.
Given that $OTHER_SIDE_JOB is understaffed, everyone who is briefed on it will probably stay there, except for maybe a few people who are really really really good at the Dendarii Brewing Co. survey, but that's a very big maybe.
I do 37.5, actually since I'm a 'phone goon', but 35 hours a week is fairly standard. We also don't need to worry about health insurance, and are members of the union.
America's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live and work there. It's like they go out of their way to make it unappealing...
Haste doesn't have to be quite so post-- there's nothing except short hours that's really changing except the accruing sick days (not), and the lack of opportunity for advancement.
I'm with the ever-perceptive Ms Bombay on this one. Much as I LOVE hearing the stories of this workplace, you NEED benefits and pay and advancement.
You've now got the perceived status that goes with the "supervisor" title. Go parley that into a job *with benefits* at some other place-with-phone-banks.
*ponders additional incentives*
Possibly someplace that would require you to move closer to Darkside?
I am very frightened of job search, given that I have held jobs at exactly two places of employment, and I got the first through a personnel shortage and the Good Ol' Boys Network and the second through "we hire warm bodies who can pass the ridiculously simple minimum job requirements" and holding on to the job.
I'll agree with the excellent tygerr - it's time to find somewhere else. At a guaranteed 40 hours and benefits. I'll back up tygerr's incentive with a variation - would a more set schedule and your own car make it easier to get together reliably with Darkside?
It would make it far easier, because I could reliably take advantage of those days when he is in a social mood and has nothing else planned. He works Monday-Friday. I currently work Thursday-Sunday. The only overlapping time off we have is Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, or late nights Monday & Tuesday (which quite obviously don't work).
The idea of having lots of "part time" employees with no benefits sounds remarkably like the marketing research company where I had my first real job. They routinely hired people as "part time" 35-hour/week employees then had them work lots of overtime. But, because they were officially part time, they weren't entitled to vacation, sick time, participation in the retirement plan, etc. Working full time for them wasn't exactly great either, since "full time" meant as many hours as it took to do the assigned work, which was often a lot more than 40 hours/week, with no additional pay.
I eventually left that job partly due to the miserable way they treated everyone and partly due to the fact that the people running the company were severely challenged in the ethics department. I did computer work, and they'd sometimes let the client tell us which numbers were supposed to be in the results of the research, whether or not the respondent responses actually added up to those numbers or not.

"part time employees" (all the grey areas) are 35/hours/week or less, unless there is overtime offered, I hear from Cubicle Management.
There will be Changes in Accordance with the other phone centers rolled out as of April 01.
Nice timing, that.

I'd suggest talking to your union rep, but those aren't too popular in the US either.

I've no idea what the solution is though, since Socialism is only very slightly less OMGEVOL than Communism.

and hie the too another call center. Post haste.

You need health insurance, badly. You need to be making enough to have a car of your own.
So, yeah, with the very good experience from this job, it may be time to start looking for something spiffier.

And since it doesn't look like promotions are thick on the ground over here, the only way up is out?

I'm maybe doing something similar myself.

I'm doing the same thing with my job.
And I have good benefits. You deserve better. Much better.

Which approaches even as we speak.
I do not actually want to move, with all the headaches that brings with it.
