I stopped using this a while ago when earlier versions broke, as I had too many comments for it. But I see that problem has been fixed.

I've got a Virtual Machine somewhere in the US which runs secondary name server and mail exchanger for me. At the moment there's 112 emails sitting there, including at least one which I think is my mother emailing me to ask why her email doesn't work...

One post down there's a discussion of insanity. I think that, right there, fits it. Except that's not the fun kind of insanity. (Though if it's from an alternate e-mail address, it's saneish.)

It's from an alternate (ISP-provided) email address: the domain hosted on the server won't let her send, since it can't connect. And she doesn't know that it's the whole server that's off the face of the internet (and at the moment, it looks like it's probably going to stay offline until at least tomorrow afternoon due to the facility requiring 24 hour notice for access).

Still, she does know that her domain is on the same server as all my stuff, so if she can't connect, neither than I. She's not /quite/ savvy enough to realise that and use alternative forms of communication (telephone, text message, carrier pigeon), though.

Ha! Pretty much.

Still, the best email I've ever had was the one from the head of the university Informatics department, informing everyone that one of their buildings was on fire, and if anyone was still inside they should get out immediately.

...and knowing geek-types, it was probably actually necessary to send that.

Not really - by that point the building was billowing huge clouds of black smoke over half the city centre. (We saw it on our way to a nightclub - it was a Friday night - but we didn't realise what was on fire until later.)

The whole building was demolished, including the Gilded Balloon comedy club, which was a lovely building underneath the AI building. (Edinburgh's Old Town mostly has buildings built on other buildings. Come here one day and you'll see what I mean. :o) )

How am I still the third most frequent commenter on your journal? I feel like I almost never respond to anyone's LJ entries any more.

I would have said "never" but then I'd also have to say "This comment is false!"

Comments rack up in those long sorts of discussions, repeatedly. And there have not been so many of those here lately. pauamma and hcolleen are the latest ones to contribute that way, but there have not yet been enough of those to rack them up to #3.

I suppose that while I don't comment on many entries, I do respond to responses to my comments a lot, and if there aren't that many discussions-in-comments, that could explain it.

It's easy to lose track of where discussions-in-comments are taking place, and how long each individual one is. It all gets lumped into "These are the things I'm discussing with this person" brain-category-thing, for me anyway.

There aren't that many. The other top people are the usual suspects who get into discussions. This is not shadesong, where you read the entry and then come back a day later and read the discussions. This is me, the Lunatic, and while I'd love chats in the corners, I don't have quite the level of my-friends-are-friends-and-talk-and-are-random, perhaps because I don't have the attention span for it?
