Knightmares: the anime! (Skippable if you don't know or care wtf this is.)
[Edit: to avoid confusion, this springs from a meme back in 2004, where
sithjawa wrote the best summary I have ever read of a piece of fanfiction that does not exist. So much so that it's been teasing my brain for years. So much so that I was tempted to write "5 Things" fic for it yesterday. This universe is *pure crack*, with a bazillion self-inserts. Not for the faint of heart; if this is not your gig, turn back now.]
The trouble with Azz/Dark fics is that they really need the background of their cases to showcase the complexity of their relationship, a complexity that's only hinted at in the actual episodes. Their light banter overlies a whole lot of mutual baggage.
The trouble with writing fic for a series that does not exist is that sometimes you have to write the series too. So.
2020. It may even be in the Darkside of Tokyo, for all we know. Having failed to destroy itself in any suitably grandiose fashion, the world has settled down into alternately improving in tech and crumbling to bits in certain satisfyingly passive-aggressive ways. Ads on websites have pretty much disappeared except for hand-selected props. (Cleverly viral content is all over; people are adblocking their music streams now instead of their webpages.) Ads in physical space are all the fuck over as a dying industry attempts to regain control.
Damon "Dark" Knight. Male. 25. Hacker for hire. Part-time wizard. Proprietor of the Knight Detective Agency (because calling himself a detective agency is simpler than attempting to explain.)
Miranda Azar. Female. 27. One of the few, the proud, the canny -- a self-supporting independent blogger in an age where most full-time bloggers have been swept up by corporations or news agencies, and the rest are hobbyists. Miranda will sell her stories, but not herself. She spends an awful lot of time in and around the orbit of "Dark" Knight, because she has a nose for a story. (And he's photogenic. Her readers are shallow sometimes.)
Supporting Cast!
A series of Dark's informants.
A series of Azz's fellow bloggers, including the colorful Ecchi-Chan, a diminutive pink-haired reviewer of erotica clad in goth-loli, who spearheads the biweekly Local Girls' Nights.
The episodes!
1.01 "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?"
Dark is hired by a medical practice to audit not their computers, but their sysadmin. Not surprisingly, he uncovers irregularities. He encounters Miranda on the trail of a story of her own. They trade notes and barbs. Further investigation leads them to the sysadmin's erstwhile girlfriend, a woman with a mysterious -- almost nonexistent -- past. The sysadmin has been abusing his access to attempt to track her down, but to no avail. Dark locates a baby of the same name, and Miranda uncovers old documentation establishing the woman, much older, in the past. The woman returns and pleads with Miranda to not publish the story, as society is too fragile to know that time travel is possible. Miranda reluctantly agrees, on the grounds that the woman release her story in the future. Dark reveals that he has the ability to tamper with memories by dulling the sysadmin's memories of the woman so he will no longer be tempted to find her.
