I think what bothers me about the G+ naming policy is how condescending it is. We The Google have decided that pseuds and nicks are bad, so we're not going to let you use them. Your choices and opinions don't matter to We The Google. We The Google are the only one who can judge you.

I'm honestly >this close< to just deleting my profile and calling it all a bad job.

I'm going to give them a little more time. But yes. Sometimes you don't want to be found by everybody and all their relatives, sometimes you just want to hang out with the people who you've given the name you're using, and not be recognized even if someone does mention you in front of someone who knows your legal name.

It just seems OBVIOUS that not everybody you know belongs in one big pile: there are members of my extremely Catholic family and members of my boyfriend's extremely Pagan family who would quite probably shed blood if they met each other. (Heck, the last time both my grandfathers were in the same house, they threatened to kill one another.) The Circles option shows they're at least aware that different people need different filters, but I don't see the need to presuppose that anyone using something besides their legal name on the Internet is up to no good. (Don't even get me started on the loaded term that is "real name.")

Yes, the point of using a pseud is so that not everyone can find me. I don't see why that's automatically a bad thing.

I've started working from the assumption that the name my friends call me when hollering across the street to get my attention is my real name, and the other one is just there for business purposes and sentimental value, like the poor kid who gets saddled with Jefferson Hilary Cecil Erickson III and offers to shortsheet/punch/crack/stab anyone who calls him anything other than Jeff.
