An open note to Microsoft

WHEN I UPGRADED MY MACHINE TO WINDOWS 10 I WAS NOT EXPECTING YOU TO CHANGE THE SETTING THAT MEANT MY MACHINE WOULD NOT REBOOT ON ME WHEN IT HAD UPDATES.

MACHINES REBOOTING ON ME WHEN THEY HAVE UPDATES TEND TO GET MY ATTENTION. YOUR CAREFUL CHOICE TO REBOOT "WHILE NOT IN USE" MEANT THAT IT REBOOTED APPROXIMATELY TWO HOURS INTO MY SLEEP CYCLE.

FUCKERS WOKE ME UP.

DON'T FUCKING WAKE ME UP, ASSHOLES.

THEN MY WINDOWS 7 BOX REBOOTED. LOUDLY. IN DEFIANCE OF MY PREFERENCES.

FUCK YOU.

You know, for most things, I actually really like Windows as a product. But the "automatic reboot if you don't tell it not to" has been one of the most broken, loathed settings for over a decade, and I have no idea why they do not get rid of it.

Yup.

They don't seem to understand that some people have computers in their bedroom.

If you ever want Windows to not reboot against your express orders, or if you ever want Windows to not download and install shit at MS' whim without your express orders, you must disable all the services associated with Windows Update. Even then I wouldn't be surprised if they had backdoors for sneaking things in somehow.

It does it to me whenever it thinks an update is "critical" unless I just kill the damn service. *stabby hands*

Augh. No, no, no. Some of us actually have things going on in the background that your reboot causes problems with...

Your lack of trust was justified, it seems.

UGH.

Windows 10 deciding to reboot on me because it had some updates happened pretty much a day or two after I upgraded and IT PISSED ME OFF SO MUCH, OMG.

You can imagine how quickly I changed that setting after reboot. I'd like to know whose idea that was so I can whap their nose with a rolled-up newspaper.

Windows making noises is why I always shut down my Windows laptop at night. I think it doesn't automatically update when it's asleep? But it does wake up every so often, and the waking-up wakes me up.

They're so inexplicably loud.
