Roses, hoses, and heat
I love roses. They were my favorite flower as a kid, the hot pink and incredibly sweet wild Alaskan roses that are the bane of my dad's outdoor activities.
Seattle is perhaps less aggressively rose-filled than Portland, but there are enough that I've had rose envy of the neighbors. Pink. White. Yellow. Red. Yellow-red.
Belovedest is unhappy with any plant that threatens to straight up stab you when you walk past. The epic vegetation removal project of '17 included the raspberry canes at the back of the backyard. (They seem to be coming back, but aren't trying to invade the lawn.)
"What's your position on roses?" I asked this Friday in Costco.
When we got home with the little red rosebush, I tried to grab one of the huge planters the evil ex left behind. I was able to scoot it off the bricks, but couldn't really budge it beyond that. Not to be daunted, I tipped it on its side and started rolling.
Belovedest helped me get it on the front lawn and placed. I dug a hole, clipped open the temporary plastic pot, and got it in with only one impudent thorn clawing at my thumb.
The instructions say to water it daily until it's "established", so I am.
The cool water is nice, but I might be sensitive to the sun or heat or something. I am currently enjoying itchy bumps on parts of me that got some sun exposure. They're calming down now that I'm back inside and have applied ointments.
I'm still excited about the rose.

Since my partner is the homeowner, they have final say. I figure that a planter is probably easier to relocate if necessary than digging something out...

May the caterpillars by you be less interested than the ones here are. I had problems with three different kinds last year.
