The Automatic Goodnight

The strip of LEDs along the fireplace will have gradually dimmed starting from 10:45 and flickering out at 11. First the Home Assistant speaks "Fifteen minute warning", and then "Five minute warning" at 11:25, and many times this is enough to get us to wrap up whatever we were working on and buzz off to bed. The major lights and screens in the living room turn off at 11:30 (at least, on weeknights). The candlelight bulbs in the blue and white shaded tentacles of my five-tentacle lamp go out. The lamps atop the mantlepiece go out: one by Belovedest's desk, one by mine. The Assistant speaks a goodnight phrase. It will most likely see us in the morning.

Two lights come on in the bedroom, at 5% intensity, in red. This is enough light to see by, but (hopefully) not enough light to wake an early sleeper.

The other branches of the tentacle lamps stay lit until we twist their knobs around. The little light over my keyboard stays on. The dining room light and the fairy lights around the living room stay on. The dining room light goes out. The fairy lights keep company with anyone straying out of the bedrooms in the darkest watches.

After Belovedest settles into bed, usually after I've brushed my teeth and just as I'm coming out of the bathroom, a jingling is heard in the hall, with a mew as Yellface ascends the bed and makes sure that the blanket is properly covering Belovedest before she settles in and kneads to make sure her bed is comfortable. She will settle in Guard Position all night, watching for intruders until the first hints of dawn.

"Computer: Hello darkness, my old friend."

The red lights blink out. Now there's just the light from my phone until I set it above my head to make gentle sounds at me until I fall asleep too.

Reassuringly, the Home Assistant is not the Dread Pirate Roberts.

This sounds very civilised.
