Jingle Jangle with extra popcorn
These days for this household, Christmas the date is increasingly observed as the date that far-flung relatives are having their parties, and the date that people not-of-the-household would like presents from them opened.
Belovedest's family developed the tradition of going to a Chinese restaurant on Christmas Eve between First Mass and Midnight Mass, and that has translated to getting takeout. This time Belovedest decided to beat the rush and place an order in early afternoon so we'd get it in time for the evening. So we had the meal in the early afternoon. We picked a local teriyaki chain, and got their #2 feast combo with an additional specific combo on account of that was what Alex wanted, and requested both without bell peppers. I have made a note that this was excellent, upon the Seasonal Festivities paper, with some additional notes for managing the mess inherent in getting a large party platter in a bakery/deli tray. We watched Hogfather. I recruited some help in putting together a folder in the household media server with shortcuts to assorted Winter Holiday fare (mostly Christmas).
There were enough leftovers for eating, but not so many that we had to make super extra room in the fridge. (Steph helped a lot with the OK that thing needs to go survey.)
We opened stockings on Christmas morning, as is my family tradition, and presents after that. Everyone got a little wax seal kit, with a seal head or two, a handle, and a pair of wick-type sealing wax sticks. (Wicked!) Belovedest distributed chocolate oranges.
It was cold enough on the 21st that on my way back from a semi-routine labs test (my insurance company wanted me to get it routinely, enough so to request it with a medium-sized bribe upon a timely-submitted proof of getting, but I had to ask my GP to order it) that I saw recycle bins shattered in a way that looked like they'd shattered when the truck put them down. I called the department and left a message that I'd seen this on such and such a street on this block, and more than one, which tells me that it was not any ordinary kind of carelessness. Which they might accuse the individual people of if it were not reported as a pattern by a third party.
My hips were extremely bad for a couple days in there, and it took a couple days of concerted rest and muscle relaxers and hot baths in order for them to calm down. The nearest appointment in my GP's practice (at all) was more than a week into the new year. If they stay calmed down I may cancel that appointment. Unless Belovedest overrides me on that. (We are sometimes allowed to override each other on these things, and they have been very very patient in listening to me yelp uncontrollably while it was in a bad flare, and did not haul me off willy-nilly to the ER like they clearly wanted to.)
The entire PNW was braced for severe weather Thursday the 22nd evening/Friday, with some recovery Saturday. I took a look at things Thursday morning, and after a quick dentist trip to confirm that the equipment in my face is the same thing my regular dentist has the parts for (yes) I set out to do the regular Friday evening trip that Belovedest does. I managed to score Steph's yogurt on account of I was early enough that there were still six or seven. Belovedest got sent home early on account of the weather and had a Snow Day Friday. We didn't venture out until it was time for the Saturday the 24thevening afternoon feast.
I did get some solar yard stakes this year, and some icicle lights. Belovedest is starting to be less full-on NOPE about celebration, and has progressed to Meh. Alex baked family tradition topping for pound cakes, altered to help the non-cinnamon-lovers. I should see about my family tradition bread (cardamom loaf) at some point here too.
Shopping was on Monday the 26th, the last St. Mark's Day of the year. We did homemade pizza, as is occasionally the tradition. It was more vigorously puffy in the dough than usual, perhaps owing to not being as aggressively punched down as usual.
Yesterday, the 27th, seemed like a bit of a disaster to me. I didn't get my morning pills until after sunset. But we did unload the rugs from my car, so that was good. I broke a nail but allowed that to make sure I did gel polish to stabilize it. This time I used the pale yellow that I thought I'd never have an occasion for, and used it as backing for gold glitter in honor of the New Year. Success there, at least.
Today I gave Alex a ride to an appointment and then validated a mental breakthrough I'd had about organization. The chunky drawered end table that traces its lineage through the Time of the Ex had once been a TV stand, had been parked by my desk as a side table, and will now go to keeping Escape Calico's litterbox off the floor. Then Belovedest kindly moved the Target-sized 8-cube organizer from our bedroom to the old site of that table, and the boxes I've been trying to organize my stuff into fit nicely. There's still chaos around my desk, but less.
