Quality #cupcake zoom

The usual suspects of mostly-post Virtual Hammer #cupcake gathered on Zoom, plus Beldorion and later Belovedest. People popped in and out, but the last few of us were in until late-late and Yellface had given up yelling me into bed.

It was interesting to sit down with a virtual beer with a SA goon, though not one who had been there during the earliest of the 2000s; apparently things have mellowed there over time and with, er, attrition. We speculated about our theories on why groups like that started happening around that time. My thought was that the technical barrier to make internet communities had lowered at a certain point, which did two things.

People who got booted out of online communities for bad behavior could create their own private spaces much more easily, without having to rely on having the skillz, gaining the skillz, or playing nice enough to establish a foothold in a new group. At the same time, people in general had more online spaces, providing a target-rich environment for dirty tricks. (And a thing that I hadn't thought of: the rise of search engines meant that dirty tricksters could find each other more easily.)

lb (who was not the goon) provided some of his history as a witness to some of the early IRC shenanigans and japery, which was also fascinating to hear about.

Cat box has been scooped. Dishwasher is humming with a light load. Time for me to sleep, because I've got my shongles shit scheduled for tomorrow!

That is interesting.

I remember finding out unexpectedly (this was, idk, maybe 18 years ago?) that the then partner of a friend from high school and uni was on 4chan, by recognising the slang he used (by being Sufficiently Online) and asking him directly. He was very much not someone I would have expected to be on that kind of forum. (Except maybe as a form of self-injury via infohazard, which is... plausible.)

(I never joined SA, but I did spent a little time lurking there ages ago, to see. A surprising amount of it was not the cesspit I expected.)

ETA: I just remembered had a different uni friend's then... I'm not sure if she used to date him or just was friends with him... and I also don't know whether he was on 4chan or SA, but he definitely was in spirit. Had a real hate-on for LJ's abuse staff for some strange reason. His degree was in philosophy. Really loved debating people. :|
