Poor Max.
First he blows up his girlfriend's car's engine. Then he blows up his iPod and gets talked to by airport security (and thank goodness that it's AU, or I'd be really fucked for timelines) and misses the shuttle to college. More hilarity ensues, and then he's saddled with Neil.
Neil is basically the worst roommate ever. They're going to get into a fight about Captain Jack eventually (Neil says that Jack is "lawful gay", Max doesn't think "lawful" enters anywhere into it) (technically omnisexual, but "lawful gay" sounds funnier and Neil is basically horrible in a few standard ways), and anyway Neil is horrible.
Neil objectifies women obnoxiously; part of this is because he's never had a meaningful relationship, and part of this is because he's a little prick.
Neil calls Max by a (usually different, usually obscene) insult basically every time they talk. "knucklefuck" is going to make an appearance; the first one is (and I'm still wrongly proud of this) "taintwhiff".
Neil is way too enthusiastic about things, and some of them are, horrifyingly, some of the same things Max is.
Rather than sports like
norabombay suggested, I think the common item of attempted bonding between the dormmates is going to be model rocketry, because this is Blow Shit Up University.
The folks at Blow Shit Up University in fact do not idolize the MythBusters. They think the MythBusters are totally precious and a good influence on impressionable small children who might try this at home, but ultimately inexperienced and insufficiently ambitious when it comes to Boom.
Max's mother sends him appalling texts. She signs them "xoxo Mom".
Raven sends Max some pretty appalling texts too. She's mad at him right now.
Airport security thought that Raven's texts to Max were hilarious.
Tomorrow, we'll be writing the horrible fucking dorm orientation sequence. Neil is such a fucknut.
Anatomy of a growing series:
1*: The Necromancer's Prayer. Introduces Alia the necromancer, and some of the rules of the world. First draft is finished; half of an edit was lost in a computer crash.
2: Grey Law. Introduces Julia, Max, Amber, and Susan. The Founding of the Neutral Denny's.
3. Brotherhood of the Salamander. Max goes to Blow Shit Up University, and a rift develops in his relationship with Amber and Raven (nee Julia). We meet the dragongeeks.
(4**.) Welcome to the Workplace. Lovie happens to the dragongeeks.
5. Circle of Fire. Introduces Raven and Amber's roommate Connie, plus Mike (who once briefly dated Lovie). This begins the Bozo trilogy with the troubles with his game.
6. The Demon Mirror. Introduces Mary, Alex, and Nick (the demon). Bozo is no longer a direct threat, but his legacy threatens to destroy Phoenix (again).
7. Venus Smash. Susan's two teams of proteges (Raven, Amber, Connie, and Mike, and Mary, Alex, and sometimes Nick) deal with a rogue cult of Venus and the horrifying after-effects of the one nice thing Bozo actually tried to do. Completes the Bozo trilogy. Cameo from Alia.
* Technically, The Necromancer's Prayer stands on its own, but should be read before #7 if you're going for continuity.
** Technically, Welcome to the Workplace also stands on its own, but it's good to know just how terrifying Lovie is before Mike mentions her, and also there's going to be dragongeek continuity that puts it after Brotherhood of the Salamander.
