Mmmm... sushi.

Does anything compare to the pleasures of homemade sushi? Mmmm. I would guess not much. (Not sashimi. I do not have the skills nor the experience for any raw fish, not to mention that I wouldn't know where to come across the good raw materials... )

But at any rate, when [livejournal.com profile] gremliness was through here last year, she made sushi for us, and demonstrated the art. I took careful note, and have made it perhaps once since.

[livejournal.com profile] votania suggested it tonight. I fixed the rice (and served some to the Little Fayoumis with cheese and chicken before altering it) and prepared the vinegar stuff (I used half a cup of vinegar, two tablespoons of brown sugar, and maybe half a tablespoon of salt) and left it to chill while we went out to get other materials. We came back with canned crab meat, avacado, cucumber, and cream cheese, and made variations on those themes, with cheddar cheese too.

[livejournal.com profile] votania rolls tighter logs of sushi than I do, so that's her job now. We laughed about this a lot.

Mmm, sushi is good.

I will try very hard to ensure that there are leftovers tomorrow for [livejournal.com profile] witchofrock.

I've been told that homemade sashimi is a waste of time, as (1) sashimi-grade fish in the market is almost as expensive as going out for sushi and (2) you have to buy it in inadvisably huge amounts. A half pound of yellowtail will make a lot of sashimi.

MMM - sushi and sashimi both.

I'm the exact opposite. I do homemade sashimi all the time, but have never attempted sushi. Of course, it's very easy to find the "raw" materials here. And one doesn't have to buy too much. And, well, there are times when an evening's activities are more fun at home...

Where's "here"? I live in California, so there's plenty of ocean (albeit an hour away)...

Seattle. One can even go stand in the open-air market and vendors will throw fish at one. Although really, only the tourists seem to enjoy this experience.

Heh. That's true of so many things.... I didn't know Seattle had lots of fish, though. Throw a comment, learn something new :)
