Bad things: ammonia leak just up the street. Ecchi-chan got a phone call saying omg leak stay inside. We went out for dinner. (I misunderstood where it would be and passed the miscommunication along, but we all got where we were going in the end.) Dinner was a whole lot of fun. There was a Spill Zone, and the waiter was cute but not up to par. But. Beating Wasabi! I need to learn to make potstickers.

I got the call that the spill was no longer an immediate hazard around 11:20 or so; stay inside if you have breathing problems. Fun!

There's a thing that my brain is going through right now. I never used to have to calculate mine/yours. Now I do. It gives me a bit of a jolt each time there's something him that's part of me now.

MySpace is the very devil. I have it on the highest authority, though, that I am a Google-stalker and not a MySpace-stalker. This makes all the difference. This is the modern equivalent of waiting by the phone.

Sushi

There seems to be something called the Phoenix Roll already. There's already an Arizona Roll. The sushi I want to try hasn't a name, yet, but it has a taste.

In the imagination of my head and my tastebuds, I see a roll of rice wrapped around chicken, avocado, and something either subtly or brilliantly spicy. Perhaps jalapeño. Perhaps a red pepper of some significant spice. But something definitely hot.

There should be varieties detailing the crossover that happens when you take the Japanese presentation and have it collide with that staple of the little Mexican restaurant, the burrito. Rice and chicken with all sorts of interesting variations on the side flavor. What does pico de gallo taste like with sushi dressing? Does it overwhelm? Red bean paste or refried beans? Is it really that much different having a toasted seaweed burrito?

Does anything compare to the pleasures of homemade sushi? Mmmm. I would guess not much. (Not sashimi. I do not have the skills nor the experience for any raw fish, not to mention that I wouldn't know where to come across the good raw materials... )

But at any rate, when [livejournal.com profile] gremliness was through here last year, she made sushi for us, and demonstrated the art. I took careful note, and have made it perhaps once since.

[livejournal.com profile] votania suggested it tonight. I fixed the rice (and served some to the Little Fayoumis with cheese and chicken before altering it) and prepared the vinegar stuff (I used half a cup of vinegar, two tablespoons of brown sugar, and maybe half a tablespoon of salt) and left it to chill while we went out to get other materials. We came back with canned crab meat, avacado, cucumber, and cream cheese, and made variations on those themes, with cheddar cheese too.

[livejournal.com profile] votania rolls tighter logs of sushi than I do, so that's her job now. We laughed about this a lot.

Mmm, sushi is good.

I will try very hard to ensure that there are leftovers tomorrow for [livejournal.com profile] witchofrock.
