Commentary on class
Jul. 16th, 2003 07:46 amThis should probably go in my 'official' journal, but not quite, since I'm going to be babbling about the teacher as well as the content. So ... not in there. Because this is a far more naked journal than that is.
Barnes is really nice.
Note to self: look up which came first, ASP or Python. Geek humor is fun.
Am a little intimidated by the kindly geeks looking at my explorations of my geeky side here and commenting. Not really totally 'Stop it already! You're freaking me out!' intimidated, just... um... I'm learning this stuff. I'm a total n00b and you know it. It's weird for me still.
I'll be a big help for my classmates who miss class -- I can just send them a link to my journal (my other one) and print out notes.
Barnes is going to be talking through break. Not a problem. She warned us about this. I've been getting here early, getting breakfast (OK, I bring a can of chocolate shit and drink it in the cafeteria) and preening before class. This means that I am actually with hair looking more like Hermione and less like Medusa, lipstick and glitter on, and awake to greet the day.
We need to make sure our script is explicit. *snicker* Nope, mind's not in the gutter at all... nope nope nope.

There goes the neighborhood.

Day so far...
Jul. 16th, 2003 11:10 amWoke up bright and early and hit school. Yay, me. Foot is feeling somewhat better, but not by any means entirely.
Web class was fun. I zoned out a little, and amused myself during lecture by writing two completely different sets of notes: one, in my private LJ, a dry condensation of the topics, and the other one in this LJ, the personal commentary on the class. She doesn't object to using the computers to take notes. Yay for that. Which I was.
Wound up taking off a bit early, as N% was doing the potty dance. Next class was Networking, with Sandstrom, in 119, which is still the one lecture room off the courtyard this tri. (The classrooms change numbers as the building is remodeled and rearranged. It's frightening.) I took Darkside's seat, after waiting for the class to empty out of the people therein. I noticed that there was one chick who by ping and pendant was a colleague; I'll probably wind up welcoming her to DeVry one of these days when no one's in a rush. It's an interesting class group in there before us, as the guy who asked me about the SCA (he saw my staff) was in there too.
Sandstrom's a lot of fun. He's a real hacker, and is encouraging us to become so as well. White or grey hat, of course. (I still want to get myself a baseball cap that's #000000 and have the words "White Hat" written on it.) I was the one who hadn't read the book who knew what "sneakernet" meant. And yes, sneakernet was in the book. Cool. Very cool. I've read the Jargon File. I don't know if anyone else in my class group has.
Spent half an hour in the cafeteria, slurping some more of the evil chocolate shit and working on my Lit homework. Simple assignment: paraphrase five passages, and relate each of them to you. No problem.
I noticed that some of the more notably blonde and bronzed examples of freshmen had shiny new DeVry backpacks, obviously from the bookstore. Curious, I peered in, and was looking at the backpacks wistfully, when the lady in the bookstore who knows me by name (can't remember hers, but she's been in several of my classes) told me that I might put one backpack on my Educard.
Yay!
I am now the owner of one black DeVry backpack by Eastpak. It is larger than my old backpack, is not held together with my uncertain stitchery, and also has wheels.
I'm reasonably content right now. I have another hour until class -- well, 45 minutes or so -- and when I get home, I'm going to vacuum and do all that good stuff, and catch up on my reading, and generally have a complete ball.
I like this. This is part of where I belong.

Assorted bits of news...
Jul. 16th, 2003 11:13 amBitchy Witchy Week is *still* trailing off. Grr. ( Female... details. )
shammash is back to his regular bouncy self, and his ear is still funny-looking, but no longer requires draining. It's lumpy and wrinkled, but it's healing in its own good time, and isn't abscessed.
Little Fayoumis starts school the 11th. Ghaa! Pants! And then we'll have to get all the usual equipment... I guess we can start with the Kleenex, because I know that's standard. His backpack's still good and still cool, and maybe I can find some Pokémon and/or racecar patches to sew on it for maximum coolness.
FatherSir sent Little Fayoumis an octopus. He's been waving it in people's faces. Garr.
Kilbridge is determined that the baby will come on schedule, and will not interrupt finals. Her doctor laughed.
It's been muggy and hazy around here. Thank you, fires. You can go ahead and stop already.
hlynna: I had to clean that up so much to even get him that cross. I just haven't been quite feeling like I'm in command there. I guess that's because I befriend the grouches... I have a model for Snape. Well, sort of two. I just imagine Spock with Darkside's darkest side. The trouble is, while Darkside is perfectly Snapeish to other people, he warms up and smiles and glows around me.

There are several new people, I think, and some old ones (and some not so old ones) who left.
I'm not up so much on the automatic friendback these days, and I've even been trimming some old people I don't feel very much of a connection with. School schedule is going to run me ragged (but I love it) and I don't feel good about having people friended who I can't read.
But, I like getting to know people. So go ahead and say hi (even you lurkers)...
Yep, social butterfly. Only most of the time I hang out in the cocoon.

iroshi, who already had a great present, and should continue to have a wonderful time.

Gemini Horoscope for week of July 17, 2003
http://www.freewillastrology.com/horoscopes/gemini.html
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
You should be seriously considered for employee of the month. I love how you've been brightening up the workplace with your bursts of imaginative flair. If your associates have not yet registered the fact that your already-considerable value has risen even further, I urge you to show them this horoscope. In another matter, I'm certain that you should also be named shopper of the month. On the one hand you've been healing an obsessive glitch in your consumer habits, while on the other hand you've been delightfully intuitive about which purchases will improve your life in the most lasting ways.
Like that backpack. And I've been debating a new palmtop.
Cancer Horoscope for week of July 17, 2003
http://www.freewillastrology.com/horoscopes/cancer.html
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
In a scene on the HBO TV show "Six Feet Under," George told Ruth about a house he'd owned in New England. Built over a stream, it had originally been a mill, though the wheel and grinding stones had been removed decades before. After he'd lived there for a while, George decided to put a new floor in the kitchen. He ripped out the old surface, then tore up the first wooden plank of the foundation below. There, just two feet below him, was the stream -- alive, sparkling, thrilling. He had known about it all along, but at that moment he actually saw it flowing beneath his house. I predict you will have a similar breakthrough in the coming week, Cancer. You will commune intimately with a source of magic you have had only indirect or imaginative contact with.
I need to call him.
A letter written, but not sent:
Jul. 16th, 2003 05:24 pmDear Student President of the Student Chapter of the IEEE at DeVry,
Thank you for sending me and everyone else in the IEEE address book a 288k e-mail.
I hope everyone that you send those to in the future in the business world includes the original attachment in their reply. Because, you know, they don't give a shit about how full your inbox gets.
There is no fucking reason for you to include an 88k graphic that is your business card, and no fucking reason for you to give us 2k worth of actual content in a fucking huge Word document.
Your geek cred just went down the john.
Love,
A second-generation IEEE member whose daddy really was a rocket scientist

Welcome to
fmh,
janezero (who friended me back),
juuro (who I believe comes through the 'Song Nexus), and
tzimiel (who seems to be coming at me through
iroshi,
shadesong, and
lmbujold all at once, as well as being new to LJ, welcome).
Usual lecture about high-volume, et cetera. I check out the journals of those who have me friended from time to time, and only tend to read a relative few on a regular basis (scary, when a friends list of 200+ can be considered "a few"...)
Glad to meet you, though. <azzgrin>
