azurelunatic: "Fangirl": <user name="azurelunatic"> and a folding fan. (fangirl)
I woke up to the unwelcome sight of a "bouncing" set of lights on my cablemodem (the downstream and upstream lights both blinking instead of steady on), a disconnected IRC window, and a red Echofon icon. The internet having not persistently turned itself back on after I got done reading the scrollback I did have, getting breakfast, and doing housework, I tucked myself back into bed with Hellspark, which I'd been saving for a special treat.

It was delicious, and I found myself crowing over a particular shibboleth (constructed languages, double meanings, and shibboleths? YES PLEASE.) and generally having a grand old time. Books with long words or names that I don't already know/are in an alien language have historically tended to get up my nose a bit (thank you, Leiaorganasolo) but now that I know that dyslexia runs in the family and that reading words as a unit rather than letter by letter is a thing, I can deal with it a little better. I'm just reading along the page, a few words at a time, and then BAM, big long unit where I don't fully know the shape, and my voiceover doesn't automatically take it, and I'm just tempted to leave it out of the voiceover and recognize it by shape, but my adult brain knows that this is not a viable long-term strategy, so I have to bust myself back down to first grade and play phonics with the alien word.

Mechanical reading issues aside, it was a foot-stomping delight. I picked up the key to the 2nd mystery before any of the characters did, which resulted in me chortling and crowing my way through leading up to the endgame. I described it on Twitter as "...chewy and delicious like the crust of good San Francisco sourdough", and the only thing that I have to say in modification of that review is that [personal profile] cleverthylacine should be fine reading it, which is good, because it's her turn next. (In defense of that joke, all I have to say is, I'm a gluten for punishment? *ducks*)

I very much love Maggy. I also have some questions about other people's readings of Geremy.

I probably have more to say about this book, but that might possibly be after a few more trips through it, and taking notes. This trip through was for me.

Evening was the puppy class my aunt is doing. There were two small puppies. It was adorable. They make the weirdest sounds. One of them was like a squeaky-toy with most of its squeak taken out.

After that I got bread. I was out of it, this apparently also being a cheese-toast month for my eccentric appetite.
