Today, I burned a floppy drive.
Class. Adding a B: drive to a computer that already has an A: floppy. Sounds simple: crack case, suss out what's inside already, plug in B: to power and ribbon connections, power up computer. B: need not be fully fitted to the computer, as it won't be staying in, just put in to test and then taken out. Turn on computer, go into settings and add the B: drive there. Test with disk.
Sounds simple.
Practically speaking, thou must have the antistatic bag down below the drive when setting it on top of a solid metal part of the computer, or else there will be foul electronic smoke rising from the drive... apparently a corner of the drive was off the mat.
Amazingly, even though we let the magic smoke out, the disk drive still works. Apparently I said something (I don't remember what I said) and dove for the power cord just in time. Hari asked me what I'd said when the drive started smoking. I have no memory of saying anything before diving for the power cord. It was most likely profanity, likely in English, possibly in Chinese, Sebright, Fayoumis, or else one of the languages Votania speaks. Odd that I don't remember it, though.
