McGuirk is saying that we're in a Victor/Victoria scenario: we're on a PC, running Mainframe Express, emulating a PC. *snork*

I'm old enough to get that.

NOTE: make sure to set it non-mainframe!!!! Also, make sure to generate listing file. Check this every time we open MFE.

(I have insufficient rights on this machine to format my shiny new zip disk. Kiss my screwdriver.)

*boggle*

OK, now I KNOW that Shrimpy's an idiot. HOW THE FUCK can you mistake a COBOL file for a Job Control Language file? The FUCK?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

That just signed, stamped, and sealed his doom.

If anyone knows of any g33k jobs I'd be good for, or knows someone who knows something -- do feel free to give me a shout.

At this point, I feel that my strength is understanding computer stuff and imparting that knowledge to the clueless or less-than-clueful. I think I'd be good with training end-users, and translating between Deep Geek and User.

Gemini Horoscope for week of November 6, 2003

http://www.freewillastrology.com/horoscopes/gemini.html

Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Gemini Kathleen Raine won several literary awards for her mystical nature poetry and was a highly respected scholar who specialized in William Butler Yeats and William Blake. She died last August at age 95. An obituary in "The Daily Telegraph" noted that she was surprised to have survived so long. More than 35 years ago, a prophetic figure in one of her dreams proclaimed that she had only 100 months (less than nine years) left to live. It just goes to show you that even the smartest, most refined students of the great mysteries are susceptible to being deceived about important matters by the little voices in their heads. Be aware of that as you listen to the jabber that fills your inner landscape in the coming week.

I got the bond back up. I feel so much better.

Cancer Horoscope for week of November 6, 2003

http://www.freewillastrology.com/horoscopes/cancer.html

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
The Cancerian mascot is the crab, which is typically a small, shy creature that moves sideways and backwards a lot. The giant land crab of Cuba is a species apart, however. It runs so fast it can outrace a horse. I nominate this super-crab to serve as your power animal during the coming weeks, when cosmic forces will be conspiring to make you exceptionally robust, forceful, and direct. Charge!

This is one of my Deadjournal icons. I do want to have an animated version of this.

Propz to those who know where it comes from without looking at the keywords. Extra propz to those who can name the episode.

Lately, we've been noticing the way Little Fayoumis has been anticipating my "And what are you supposed to be doing?" questions by not answering and performing the desired action. Which is fine when he gets the action right.

I've started stressing (last night, today) the "Answer me in words" thing.

He also answers rhetorical questions. (The other day, I asked him how many times I'd told him, turn the water on first, then soap the hands -- after his hands are all soapy, he can't manage the faucet -- and he solemnly counted on his fingers, then answered, "Three.")

I hope he starts answering the actual questions soon...

I haven't seen Matrix: Revolutions yet, and I'm not likely to for at least a little bit.

I love you all, and this is how you do a cut tag: <lj-cut text="Matrix Spoilers reside within!">

Just cut and paste that in front of any spoilers, if you would be so kind (I have done the magic HTML thing that makes it appear exactly as it should be), and all of us will be happy.

From sraun@fireopal.org on the [livejournal.com profile] lmbujold List:

And I know a great story about someone randomizing a keypunch deck on purpose. Upper level CS class at Michigan Tech University - they were assigned 'write a program to deal, print, and evaluate bridge hands'. They had to hand in three different runs of the program. Randomization of the desk was left up to the programmer. Most of them wrote a randomization routine to do it - one blonde female make up a deck of cards using the keypunch. This is due on the same Monday that a big Fortran 101 (i.e., the intro CS course that EVERYONE at MTU had to take) project is due. And lowly Fortran 101 students HAD to use keypunch.

She gets in line, gets to the front of the line, runs her deck, pulls it out, shuffles it, runs it, pulls it out shuffles it and runs it a third time. Turns around, and the whole line is looking at her slack-jawed and wide-eyed. She puts on her best blonde persona, and says 'Well, I didn't know if it ran right the first time, so I thought I'd try in a couple of different orders.' And walked off.

She had to keep three or four cards at the beginning of the deck, and one or two at the end. She was apparently good at shuffling cards.

My latest zip disk, I labeled. Accurately, I might add.

It has my name on it.

Then it says, "Warning: contains COBOL!"

Then it has a skull-and-crossbones.
